Vietnamese Boxer Secures 5th Paris Olympic Spot

Anh has secured her ticket to the Paris Olympics by reaching the semifinals of the 54kg weight class at the first World Qualification Tournament in Italy from March 3 to 11.

She achieved a dominant victory, defeating Islem Ferchichi of Tunisia 5-0 in the eighth round bout on Monday.

Earlier in the tournament, Anh triumphed over opponents from Dominica and Hungary in her first and second qualifying matches, respectively.

By making it to the semifinals, Anh has secured automatic qualification for the 2024 Olympics, regardless of her final ranking in this competition. The Paris Olympics are scheduled to take place from July 26 to August 11.

This marks Vietnam’s fifth qualification for the Summer Olympics, with previous spots earned by shooters Trinh Thu Vinh and Le Thi Mong Tuyen, cyclist Nguyen Thi That, and swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang.

To recognize her achievement, the Vietnam Boxing Federation has awarded Anh VND50 million (US$2,030).

Anh, born in 1997 in the Mekong Delta province of An Giang, is Vietnam’s reigning boxing champion. She achieved a major milestone in her career by winning the gold medal at the Thailand Open in 2022.

Vietnamese boxers still have the opportunity to secure Olympic berths at the upcoming second World Qualification Tournament, which will take place in Bangkok from May 23 to June 3.

During this event, a total of 45 to 51 athletes, including 20-23 women and 25-28 men, will qualify for the Olympics.

Olympic boxing is scheduled to take place from July 27 to August 10 at the Roland Garros Stadium and the North Paris Arena.
